Do you want to read your Bible and finish feeling all warm and fuzzy inside? Do you want to to be challenged in your Chrisitianity? Do you want to be encouraged? Honestly all these things can happen with a Bible reading plan!
“For the Word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
2 Timothy 1:16,17 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
Bible Reading Plan: Study By Topic
We are commanded to study the Bible, not just read it!
2 Tim 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Don’t be afraid to dig into a good Bible study and really learn the material. I have found that I am quite passionate about studying something when my family is going through a difficulty. I know God has the answers. Isn’t it wonderful that God is not hiding His will from us? He has promised that if we ask, seek and knock we will find!
I have learned some powerful lessons studying forgiveness when there was a rift in our family. Another study about Jacob was frustrating to me until I realized that the purpose of the narrative was not about Jacob! The study highlighted God’s great compassion on Jacob and his family. A house of children to empty nesters: life transitions are difficult. Studying God’s Word helps us be prepared for difficult times.
Bible Reading Plan: Study Through a Book
Sometimes a Bible reading plan can end up being a legalistic check list. For example, “I read Romans 1 today, I’m good.” I like to pick a chapter or book and read a passage and then discuss it in the following manner: What does this passage teach me about God? What does this passage teach me about myself/man? How can I apply this to my life?
Bible Reading Plan: Through the Bible in a Year
There are times that I really do want to read through the entire Bible in a year. I recommend this for every high schooler to do at least once and then regularly throughout their life. I like the following Bible plan: One Year Bible Reading Plan. The readings include some Old Testament, some New Testament, some psalms, and a proverb or two for each day.

I think there are great benefits to reading the Bible through in a year – or even in less than a year!
You begin to see themes that you might miss otherwise. Two years ago the Lord showed me how many, many times that God showed His mercy to mankind. The word mercy appears over 250 times and that number doesn’t include related words like merciful.
The mercy of God is also shown through Biblical historical accounts. God brought out Israel from Egypt, led them through wilderness and brought them to the Promised Land. God’s mercy is shown as a contrast to God’s judgment. God’s mercy is shown after people are judged and then repent and turn to Him. God’s mercy is shown in the provisions of rain for crops, strength for life’s trials, and the promises of God’s help for us day by day.
Reading through the Bible in a short time period allows you to see the redemptive plan of God unfold and His sovereign will triumph through history.
Reading through the Bible in a systematic way allows you to connect themes that you might otherwise miss: the Old Testament Law requirements and the freedom from the Law as shown in Hebrews and Galatians. A greater priest has come (Jesus Christ) and gave a more excellent sacrifice: Himself! He rose from the dead and now are sins are not just covered but are removed. Hallelujah!
